Cerebral Palsy Is a condition that often occurs when there has been lots of damage to the brain, this usually happens just before or during birth but also can happen if there has been a case of meningitis or brain tumors. Cerebral Palsy or CP will mostly affect the physical movements but in very severe CP there may also be mental retardation.
This condition can vary greatly from there being only signs of mild clumsiness to the person being bound to a wheelchair, also suffering from having visual or hearing impairments or a range of many other related difficulties generally the more damage to the brain the more severe the Cerebral Palsy. For a child inflicted with this illness they will tend to have problems communicating with others and be unable to control there facial expressions. Unfortunately there is no cure for CP but this is a condition that does not get worse over time.
It is possible for someone with cerebral palsy to live an average lifespan. The child may need some or all of the following treatments: physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology. It is possible for the child to attend mainstream schools; the teachers and parents will devise an individualized education program. Usually children with cerebral palsy can easily keep up with their schoolwork sometimes they may even be considerably brighter than others of the same age.
This might be a non progressive illness, that is, assuming that the truama to the brain has not caused other damage. Cerebral Palsy will never get worse, although its effects could vary over time. The illness also never improves. It is a lasting disablement which stays with an individual all their life.
